Todd-Aikens Acute Rehab Care Center
Caring for those who can no longer care for themselves.
The Todd-Aikens Health Center of Johnson Memorial Hospital has a long-standing tradition of providing services to the residents of Johnson County. Opened in 1986 with funds provided by a gift from the Todd-Aikens family, the center originally provided long-term and skilled nursing care. Now, with the opening of the Todd-Aikens Acute Rehab Care Center in 2007, the center provides acute inpatient rehabilitation. The original gift from the Todd-Aikens family was intended to provide rehabilitation services to the people of Johnson County, so acute rehab falls right in line with the mission of Todd-Aikens.
What is acute inpatient rehabilitation?
The focus of an acute rehab unit is to help patients regain their highest level of function while recovering from a major illness or trauma. Most patients return to their homes with family assistance, rather than moving to an assisted facility. To achieve this, the rehab unit provides 24-hour nursing care with close medical supervision. Additionally, the patient must received at least three hours of skilled therapy (physical, occupational and/or speech) per day.
Patients with a variety of conditions, including hip fracture, joint replacement, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions, can benefit from acute rehab.
While a stay on a skilled nursing unit requires a three-day hospital stay prior to admission, a physician can admit patients to an acute rehab facility from other settings, including from home, an assisted living facility or a nursing home.
The average stay on an acute rehab unit is 10 to 14 days. Patients in a skilled nursing facility may have lengthier stays resulting in a permanent nursing home placement.
While some patients leave Johnson County for more advanced care in the early stages of treatment for a disease or condition, many people do not realize that if further rehabilitation is needed, the patient can be moved back closer to home for their acute rehab. This can be more convenient for the family and allow the patient to recover closer to home.
If you or a family member is in need of rehabilitation after an injury, surgery or illness, remember that the Todd-Aikens Acute Rehab Care Center at Johnson Memorial Hospital is still here and available to help you.
