Bariatric Surgery

The bariatric procedure used at JMH is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. In this procedure the size of the stomach is permanently reduced and the small intestines are re-routed to bypass a portion of the small intestine.

The Roux-en-Y is generally regarded as the most effective way to surgically address morbid obesity. Research has shown it has the greatest results in providing long-term weight loss and weight management.

Most of our patients qualify to have this procedure done laparoscopically. This is a minimally invasive procedure. It does not require a large incision or opening in the abdomen. The surgeon makes a series of small openings. Into the openings the surgeon inserts a fiber-optic camera that acts as the eyes for the surgical team. Through the other openings specially designed surgical instruments are inserted allowing the procedure to be completed.

The patient then recovers more quickly because only a small number of small incisions are made. The risk of infection and complications that results from the larger, "open" incision technique are drastically reduced, shortening recovery time.
