What is the meaning of Bariatric? – The term bariatric is derived from the Greek word “bari” meaning weight. Bariatric medicine is the art and science of medical and surgical weight management.
Weight loss advice is as individual as you are. Everyone metabolizes food differently, and requires an approach specific to their needs. With the complexities of today’s lifestyles, physicians specially trained in bariatric medicine and bariatric surgeries are the quickest and safest routes to reaching and maintaining your goal.
Drs. Lindsay and Snyder have recently partnered in selling protein supplements out of Dr. Lindsay’s office to help you meet your protein needs while going through the weight loss process.
What is a Medical Bariatrician and what can she do for me?
- Initial patient work up including medical history, physical examination, laboratory studies and additional testing if needed depending on your medical history.
- Appropriate counseling on diet and nutrition, exercise, behavior modification, and prescription medications if indicated.

What type of weight loss surgery is being done here at JMH, what is entailed in the pre and post surgery process, and how do I know I qualify for this surgery.
The weight loss surgery that is done at JMH is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This surgery limits food consumption and absorption of calories in the body by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach and rerouting food so it bypasses a portion of the small intestine.
The majority of diabetics are cured of their diabetes after weight loss surgery. Hypertension, sleep apnea, cardiac and respiratory problems are all markedly improved after weight loss surgery.
- To qualify for the surgery, you need to have a body mass index of 40 or more or between 35-39 with at least 2 health problems related to your obesity that you are being treated for. This corresponds to roughly 100 pounds over your ideal body weight.
- Attend an initial educational seminar.
- Appropriate counseling on pre and post-operative diet, exercise, behavior modification, psychological evaluations, medical and surgical evaluations.
- Attend support group meetings.
- Scheduled follow-up and counseling to help you maintain the weight loss that has been achieved.
