Insurance Options

Most insurance companies classify clinically morbid obesity as a chronic disease. And they recognize the dramatic health benefits of significant weight loss that bariatric surgery can produce. It's important to communicate upfront with your insurer to make sure your request for coverage is evaluated properly and fairly.

As the demand for bariatric services has increased some insurance companies have become more restrictive in their process for reviewing and approving bariatric procedures. Don't be discouraged. The Bariatric Care Center staff works closely with a vast array of insurance carriers and employee benefit plans. The coordinator will assist you in the process, providing you with guidance and advice that will help you work your way through the approval process.

Three important tasks JMH can help with:

  1. Assisting you in verifying that your insurance will cover the bariatric procedure, and helping you assemble the information and documentation that might be required.
  2. Obtaining a referral from your doctor, if one is needed, and confirming your need for the procedure.
  3. Helping you set up a self-pay payment option suitable for you, if you choose to forego insurance coverage.

For those patients who choose to pay for the procedure on their own, Johnson Memorial Hospital offers a range of options that include special discounts and payment plans. JMH also has established special arrangements with lending institutions for those wishing to finance their surgery with a monthly payment.
