Life after Surgery
First of all, life after surgery will be very different. Following your 2-3 day hospital stay you'll follow a schedule of personal visits with the bariatric surgeon that is tailored to your individual needs. Generally, but not in every case, that schedule of visits will look something like this:
- Week 1: Office visit with the physician, weight check and picture taken for "before and after" photo album.
- Month 1 after surgery: Office visit with the physician and a weight check.
- Month 3 after surgery: Office visit with the physician, weight check and lab tests to check for malabsorption of nutrients.
- Month 6 after surgery: Office visit with the physician and a repeat of Month 3 lab tests.
- Year 1 after surgery: Office visit with the physician, weight check and a new picture for the before and after photo album. Repeat of lab tests.
- Yearly visit thereafter.
Your eating habits will need to be adjusted. Initially you'll be limited to clear, low-sugar liquids for one week. After that your diet will be reintroduced to soft foods and later regular foods in small portions.
- There may be some foods that will need to be severely restricted in your diet.
- You'll need to support your diet with vitamins and other nutritional supplements.
- Your greatest weight loss will take place in the first 18 months. Many of our patients lose over 70% of their excess weight during this period.
- You will need to follow a regular routine of exercise and physical activity.
- In the vast majority of cases, obesity-related health conditions, i.e. diabetes, heart problems, respiratory problems, joint pain, are resolved or significantly improved.
