My first exposure to weight-loss surgery, commonly called bariatric surgery, was during my surgery residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. I was extremely impressed by the difference that the surgery made in the lives of my patients.

After completing my residency, I was determined to start my own program of bariatric surgery at Johnson Memorial Hospital. Weight-loss surgery was not a very popular topic in the health care profession at the time, and I met some resistance along the way.

Eventually we were able to perform the first gastric by-pass surgery at JMH in 1999. Since that time, the bariatric program has expanded to become, I feel, one of the best programs in the region. In fact, we were one of the first programs to perform the gastric by-pass procedure laparoscopically in Indiana. Today, many hospitals are trying to start a bariatric program. I believe experience counts when it comes to bariatrics and the proliferation of bariatric surgery programs is a real concern to many bariatric surgeons.

I'm often asked why I chose to practice at JMH instead of one the "big city hospitals." First, patients are not numbers at Johnson Memorial Hospital. Second, JMH is big enough that I have all the most recent technology I need for my patients. In fact, the technology and facilities at the hospital surpass many of the larger, city hospitals that I have visited. Third, everyone knows me and likewise I know everyone on staff at the hospital. The collegial relationships allow me to get things done for my patients more efficiently.

Finally, our program lets me focus on patients. As a bariatric patient at JMH I'm your surgeon. You're stuck with me for life when you're a patient at the Bariatric Care Center. I don't assign assistants to take care of my patients. I value the one-on-one relationship that I have with each bariatric patient.

As I'm sure most people who are considering bariatric surgery know, the surgery can be the beginning of a whole new life for someone. I'm privileged to be a part of their experience.

Sincerely,

Dana Lindsay, M.D.
