Cancer Prevention Facts
Prostate Cancer
- During routine, yearly examinations, have your doctor test the amount of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in your blood and do a digital rectal exam (DRE).
- You may be able to lower your risk of prostate cancer by eating less red meat and fat and eating more vegetables, fruits, and grains.
- Taking vitamin E daily may lower the risk of prostate cancer.
Lung Cancer
- Do not smoke or quit smoking.
- Maintain a general healthy lifestyle.
Colon and Rectal Cancer
- Get a regular colorectal cancer screening or testing.
- Maintain a good diet and exercise regularly.
- Multivitamins containing folic acid, or folate, may lower risk.
Breast Cancer
- Perform breast self-examinations and report any breast changes to a health professional right away.
- Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year.
- Avoid alcohol, exercise regularly, and maintain a slim body.
Skin Cancer
- Limit your exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Avoid being outdoors in intense sunlight, 10 am to 4 pm, for too long.
- Use sunscreens with a SPF factor of 15 or more on areas of skin exposed to the sun.
- Wrap-around sunglasses with at least 99% UV absorption provide the best protection for the eyes and the skin area around the eyes.
- Know the moles on your body and check them periodically for changes.
