Often the surgical approach is best for those with Body Mass Index (BMI of 40) or more, or a BMI of 35 to 39 with health problems related to the excess weight.
Our Wellness Services staff will discuss with you whether you qualify for a surgical procedure. They will guide you through insurance coverage questions and discuss special pricing and payment options for those whose insurance coverage does not include weight loss surgery.
This procedure is one of the most commonly performed weight loss surgery procedures. Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass alters the digestion process by combining restrictive and malabsorptive elements. The surgery limits, or restricts, the amount of food intake by reducing the size of the stomach, while also limiting the absorption of foods in the intestinal tract, known as malabsorption.
View the video below to see how a minor incision with small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery allows the procedure can be done laparoscopically.
The Sleeve Gastrectomy, also known as the gastric sleeve is an surgery to remove a portion of the stomach and re-size the stomach. A small stomach size helps patients become full faster and decreases the appetite.
The gastric sleeve is a simpler surgery than the gastric bypass and the procedure can be done laparoscopically. View the video below.
Our weight loss surgery program is customized to meet each patient's needs. Education classes (seminars) are required before you begin the process of weight loss surgery and support groups are available whenever you need them— before, during and after the weight loss journey.
Bariatric Surgery Seminar
We have a comprehensive team of professionals including surgeons, nurses, registered dietitian, and psychologist to lead a strong interdisciplinary team that will be hands-on in your care. When you attend this free educational seminar you will interact with each professional to understand how weight loss surgery can help you gain control of your weight, regain health and start a new life. Attending a Bariatric Seminar or viewing our the information session online is required prior to starting the bariatric surgery process.
Attendance is free. Registration is not required but you may call Amanda Brown, RD, at 317.346.3867 or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
Weight Loss Surgery Support Group
Support group meetings are held monthly at Johnson Memorial Hospital for those who have had weight loss surgery as well as for those who are considering having bariatric surgery.
Surgical body contouring after major weight loss improves the shape and tone of your underlying tissue and removes excess sagging fat and skin. The result is a more normal appearance with smoother body contours. This is the final phase of your total weight loss experience.
We have a special pricing and payment option for those whose insurance coverage does not include body contouring.
If you are interested in learning more about weight loss surgery and you are ready to take steps for the Weight Loss and Wellness Center to review your candidacy for the surgery, please view the Patient Education Seminar Prior to Weight Loss Surgery video.
